What Manchester looks like

To a new student.

Manchester is the UK's second international student city. Friendly, navigable, and far cheaper to live in than London — with a large Chinese community around Oxford Road and large South Asian and African communities across the wider city.

Buses on Oxford Road run constantly from the centre to the campuses — your child will use that route every day. The Metrolink tram covers wider Manchester. Rusholme (the "Curry Mile") has South Asian shops and restaurants, and Chinatown is small but real and worth showing your child early.

What they'll need help with most: working out where they actually live in relation to campus (housing spreads from Fallowfield to the city centre), opening a bank account, and meeting one person who knows the city.

Hosts in Manchester

Vetted, named, photographed.

We have a small founding cohort of vetted GSOS hosts in Manchester for September 2026 — speaking Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Yoruba, and English. As we recruit more, we add them here.
